Desperate need in Hinche, Haiti
Dear Concerned About Haiti,
WE NEED YOUR HELP TODAY!
This is a call for help to anyone who might have connections already on the ground.
We have 3000 orphans and other vulnerable children in Hinche and our food supplies are depleted. I have contacted every listed organization and government agency on the ground in Haiti.
Kidcare has a long standing relationship with an orphanage in Haiti and is working diligently to help.. Currently they have over 3000 little ones to feed and care for every day with more on the way. Many of these children are now living on the brink of survival. We have a cargo container is set to go out with food and supplies but will take 2 weeks to get there. We are calling all over the world day and night trying to secure provisions in the more immediate future as food has run out.
Please help me get the word out for these dear children. Pass my email on to anyone you know who might have connection or influence for food. We believe we are all just a few degrees from someone who can help. You never know if someone you know can be the answer to save lives.
We have been in contact with the UN clusters on t ground, the State Department, World Food Program, Red Cross, Clinton Fund, World Vision, Feed the Children. So far none of these contacts have been able to help, the need is so widespread. (I was told they send food to those who have been without the longest)
Please let me know if any of you have connections for food in Haiti. We can send a truck to pick up if necessary. However, our diesel supply is low.

My long term project 4 next couple of days is getting a 70K generator to power hotel.
Some one told me that I may be sleeping outdoors but it doesn't mean I'm poor!!
Some "tent" homes are turning into "tin roofing" homes. Using tin roofing/scraps to build the homes makes them look so much more permanent
"Haven" out of Ireland helps to build homes for disenfranchised. Habitat For Humanity(Westchester) is here.2 org's known 4 building homes
The Oloffson is still open and we hope to still be taking guests in February

Now they're telling me it's the Canadian Army Corps of Engineers that are in Jacmel..I'll try and find out

The particular house I'm refering to isn't a Gingerbread but it's an old house, a nice house. Historical
I've seen bamboo on the road to Kenscoff, which is a mountain road. Haven't seen it to the south towards Jacmel. Rarely used for anything.
I hear the girl that was saved today survived on salt crackers. she seems to have been trapped in a place with some space and food.
The press is fighting to scoop the rescue stories. Racing to get the news out first. Global competition for the story. AP vs Reuters vs AFP
I heard about the rescue from the NYT photog. The sirens sped by the Oloffson a short while before the story broke.
Someone has to decide which homes r 2 be saved or not.There has to be an appeals panel unless there's a public safety issue

I am getting ready to spend another night in the US embassy awaiting the signature of the Haitian prime minister so that orphans can be released to their homes in the US.
Every family has a story from the baby who spent 5 hours in the rubble to the mom wh has been following the process sinc her little girl was an infant. Lilly is now 3 yrs old.

The US Embassy is doing nothing to facilitate allowing adoptive parents
with their "hoped for " adopted children who have received humanitarian
parole to leave HAITI instead bowing to Preval's request, emphasize
request, that he personally sign off on Haitian children going to the US.
The email from Ms. Strassner is heartbreaking as she has been sleeping on
the floor of the Embassy in PAP for two nights with her girls and the US
Consul General, and the US Ambassador, are incapable or bureaucratically
incompetent of assisting in the process. She will spend yet another night
with two now sick girls hoping our Government shows some mercy and as
much fortitude as the Canadians and the French! Anyone who has a
suggestion as to how to publicize, better yet just remedy, the inhumane
and patronizing treatment these families are receiving and get something
done would be most appreciated.
I just returned Monday and PAP is no place for abandoned children or, for
that matter, any child at present.

Aside from food and shelter the big crisis is:
HUGE OVERCROWDING -- 8,9,10 people to a 4-6 person tent.. girls being
made to lie next to men they dont know.. etc. (eyewitness testimonies to
the Famn Deside rep). Also young unaccompanied girls being put with
families they don't know and being made to lie down next to men they
don't know.
LACK of LATRINES - ppl forced to urinate and defecate right by where they
are sleeping, and
LACK OF PRIVACY/SHELTER for children who are being exposed to OPEN
PROSITUTION sexual acts being carried out openly, even in the daytime,
with only a tarp above the person who is selling herself... this is
increasing as women have become desperate to eat or get money and is
causing serious friction with outraged families demanding they go
elsewhere to keep this away from children.. violence is feared for the
women selling sex and the camp residents if this situation is not
addressed quickly
LACK OF SANITARY PADS for women -- overall a lack of awareness, claim
women in the camps, of the needs of displaced women. They need this
immediately.
They also REQUEST PURIFICATION tables for washing themselves -- not just
for drinking water.. for those having their monthly periods.
SUPERVIZED SPACE for children to play and to learn. They suggest
recruiting teachers from within the camp staff who are already trying to
provide childcare or some outdoor schooling for children. For this they
need: SOME EDUCATIONAL MATERIALS

Samson was recovering some books at the old HELP center yesterday afternoon when a neighbor approached him with a letter that someone had asked him to deliver to HELP. The letter announced the death of Marc-Erline Dezulma, a second-year HELP accounting student from Gros Morne. Samson gave the the letter to Garry, who spoke with Marc-Erline's family and confirmed her death: the Port-au-Prince apartment building where she lived collapsed in the quake, leaving no survivors.
Garry later discovered that students who had been filling out the contact spreadsheet in the days following the quake erroneously marked Marc-Erline as "contacted" rather than "attempted contact". We reviewed the entire list again today and found that another student, Evenson Jean, second-year in computer science, also perished when his classroom building crumbled, taking fifteen students with it.

Marc-Erline graduated at the top of her class in 2008 at Jean XXIII high
school in Gros Morne. Her older brother Erland had been the top graduate two years before her, and the Catholic brothers at the school had sponsored him to study engineering in Port-au-Prince. Once admitted to HELP, Marc-Erline followed Erland to the city, where they were joined by a younger sister, who also perished in the apartment. Erland had the difficult task of returning to Gros Morne with the tragic news.
Marc-Erline was one suffered a big loss. It is hard to put into words what it means for someone with so much promise and who had worked so hard, overcoming all kinds of obstacles, to be crushed in this disaster. Please pray for Marc-Erline's family, the HELP
community, and Haiti."

It is doubly tragic that Evenson paid the ultimate price for his determination to succeed.

"We thank you for this noble service that you have offered our family, which, sadly, through this natural catastrophe, ended before its proper conclusion."
